Budget Survey Results

Writer's picture: LHCALHCA

In 2024, LHCA board members Chiquita Emel and Teresa Taylor participated as community engagement partners in the first-ever 2nd District Participatory Budget pilot in Los Angeles County. This project aimed to give community members a voice in how to best use the $500,000 earmarked for the Ladera Heights Community. A big thanks to Ellen Deleston and Jim Chitty for working on the advisory committee and the community at large for completing the surveys. With input from the community and the advisory committee, a total of $780,000 was awarded to our community for the following projects: (description is a brief overview)

1.   Tree and Common Area Improvement Project – ($150,000 - $250,000)

•    This project aims to improve the perimeter common areas by adding brick-and-mortar community signs (Ladera Heights) and planting climate-specific trees and landscape features to increase the aesthetic values of neighborhoods and support environmental and public health benefits.

2.     Active Minds, Healthy Lives Initiative – ($100,000 - $150,000)

Yvonne B. Burke Senior and Community Center

•     This initiative is designed to support the overall well-being of the community’s older adult residents by promoting digital literacy and encouraging physical activity. Adding digital literacy classes will provide older adults with the tools needed to stay connected with family, access essential online services, and participate in educational programs.

3.     Digital Literacy Empowerment – ($175,000)

Yvonne B. Burke Senior and Community Center

•     This project aims to establish a new program to provide technology classes for residents of all ages, aimed at improving digital skills and helping participants become more tech-savvy. The program will feature expert-led sessions, and upon completion, participants will receive a certificate and job placement assistance.

4.     Youth Digital Workforce Development ($200,000 - $300,000)

•     This project aims to provide funding for nonprofits to lead an employment and job training initiative for residents ages 14 to 24.

Neighbor, do you own a company that could provide services on the above initiatives? IF so, the County Supervisors office is now accepting vendor applications.

Thanks again to everyone who participated in this project to enhance the Ladera Heights Community!
